EnsleyEdits: Creating a Style Resource for Professional Writers

Abstract from Kennesaw State University Digital Commons:
This capstone explores the creation of a resource that helps professional writers keep up with ever-changing style practices and understand the implications of different stylistic and mechanical choices. Examining the history of style guides, analyzing the content of existing style references through the lens of prescriptivism and descriptivism, and assessing the gaps of current online style resources demonstrate how a new online style resource hosted on Instagram, EnsleyEdits, can meet this need for professional writers. Research on current social media, accessibility, and design practices demonstrate how content on the EnsleyEdits account can succeed on Instagram, and the results of an IRB-approved usability study highlight insights from the resource’s target audience. Collectively, these research components reveal how the EnsleyEdits style resource can help writers produce effective, conscious, intentional writing.

Introduction to Trello

For this short assignment, I had to create a video with captions that lasted exactly one minute. I am passionate about project management software, so I wrote a script, recorded my audio and then recorded my screen, moving my cursor according to the audio instructions I had already written and recorded. My goal for this piece was to make Trello more approachable to users unfamiliar with the platform.

Gumbo Newsletters Style Guide

For my final project in World Englishes, I created a sample of applied writing that took into consideration multiple English-speaking countries. I developed a partial style guide for a fictional company. It includes company background information and organizational values, sections on typography for U.S. and U.K. markets and brand colors. The assignment also includes a reflection demonstrating a critical analysis of the applied writing sample. See the style guide in my Portfolio Projects folder.

Inclusive Editing Recommendations for Organizations

For my final project in Intercultural Communication in Contexts, I created another applied writing sample. This project also features my research on the lack of inclusivity of dictionaries as authoritative sources and a reflection demonstrating a critical analysis of the research and applied writing sample. See the project in my Portfolio Projects folder.

Interactive Narrative

After interacting with (and enjoying) several games published on Twine, a free tool for creating non-linear stories, I decided to take an applied approach to this project. Rather than crafting a story, I created a quiz-style narrative that could help potential pet owners consider a few of the factors that go into adopting a dog or cat. Many of the possible paths in this narrative are based on my own experience with adopting my first dog. Exploring the writing that goes into interactive narratives showed the wide range of possibilities that exist in this corner of the writing world. Other applications for choose-your-own-adventure stories may include increasing blog traffic and digital wayfinding, or helping website visitors find the resources they’re looking for with ease.

This screenshot depicts the first choice a user has to make in Ensley Fraschillo's interactive narrative. The white opening text reads,"Congratulations on deciding to adopt a dog! Work through these questions to get an idea of what dog might be a great match for you. Let’s start with your budget."

The dark blue text for the first option a user could select reads, "I make enough to cover the adoption fee, flea and heartworm medicine, and toys and a kennel now (about $600) plus about $1,000/year to cover vet visits and food expenses."

The lighter blue text for the second option a user could select reads, "I am not able to afford those expenses at this time."
This screenshot shows the first panel in my interactive narrative project. Users simply choose which option is most applicable for them on each screen.
